Step Change Data Governance

Devised by Refugee Action, CAST, The Disrupt Foundation, and a consortium of 11 partners in the Greater Manchester area, the Kompasi Platform https://www.kompasi.org/about/ is a key source of information and guidance for incoming refugees to an area, and has since started to be adopted in other parts of the country too.

Obviously, protection of personal data is absolutely fundamental for the people involved, some of whom are in very vulnerable situations: in late 2023 and early 2024 we ran two workshops to map out the data ecosystem, and to consider in detail the ethical dimensions of how data was handled alongside a partner who looked at the details of data sharing agreements and data protection impact assessments.

This enabled CAST to commission the build of the Kompasi platform and identify safe initial modes of operation, minimising the sharing of personal data and maintaining trust levels.
